Humans Are Wired to Connect

"Empathy" is one way we commonly describe how we feel connected with other people during times of emotional grief or celebration. Newsweek's article "How to Read a Face" describes Social Neuroscience as the emerging field poised to scientifically confirm what we've always known intuitively – that emotionally, humans are wired to connect. Scientists can now understand on a neuronal level how social interactions actually work. For example, it's known that continual exposure to the hormones that occur with high levels of stress physically damages the body, and research has shown that emotional support from a loved one can "calm the brain circuits that produce stress hormones."

People are attuned to each other emotionally, and in organizations the emotions of leaders tend to project the strongest. As Daniel Goleman, author of Social Intelligence: The New Science of Human Relationships, points out, employees are sensitive their boss's behavior, and managers need to assume a greater responsibility in understanding human relationships to create a positve, supportive environment for their workers.
