"Do unto others as you would have others do unto you" is a timeless moral precept. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work very well as a guide to effective communication. To get through to others, we need to communicate the way they prefer, not the way we do. In our interpersonal communication modules, participants learn how to recognize what's important to other people and to translate their requests, proposals, and instructions so that others will hear, understand, and act on them. These skills enable them quickly capture others' interest, obtain agreement with less effort, and move others to action.
Solving Common Communication Problems
We can train your internal training staff—or provide our own experienced consultants—to facilitate workshops that address the following symptoms of poor communication: lack of influence in key relationships, wasted time due to misunderstandings, mistakes due to faulty or incomplete information, and unresolved conflicts.
To overcome these problems, participants learn how to:
- Recognize. Identify other people's preferred ways of communicating by what they do, say, write, and ask.
- Translate. Adjust their requests, proposals, and presentations to match other people's preferred ways of communicating.
- Answer. Address the key questions uppermost in other people's minds that must be answered to win their support.
